Easy-to-grow indoor blooms to beat the winter blues

African violets, orchids and peace lilies frequently can be found already blooming at florists and other retailers that sell houseplants. These plants can be enjoyed for several months without a lot of work.

Here are a few tips:

  • These three flowering plants will do best in a bright window or room, but out of direct sunlight.
  • The soil for these three plants should be kept evenly moist, so try not to let it dry out between waterings. Violets do best when watered from the bottom up rather than top down. Water may damage the leaves of violets.
  • Snip off dead flowers to encourage more blooms.
  • Use a water-soluble fertilizer formulated for flowering houseplants. Always read and follow the label directions.
