Leaf blades are broad and flat. Upper leaf surfaces may be rough with small hairs on the edges. Characteristic tufts of white hairs at base of leaves. Seed heads are triangular and up to 8 inches long, with many small, silvery spikelets. Foliage emits an unpleasant odor when crushed.
