7 New Perennial Flowers for 2026 Gardens

Long-blooming, pollinator-friendly varieties

New perennial flower introductions appear every year, but only a few stand out for gardeners. The best new perennial flowers of 2026 feature longer bloom periods, compact growth habits, and strong appeal to pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.

Here are seven standout perennial plants debuting in garden centers and nurseries in 2026.

Here’s a quick look at seven standout perennial flowers arriving in garden centers for the 2026 growing season.

Crocosmia 'Dark Fire'

Also known as montbretia, crocosmias are under-used summer perennial bulbs that produce strappy, lily-like leaves and red to red-orange flowers in mid-summer.

'Dark Fire' is particularly striking for its dark, "smoky" foliage that pairs nicely with the variety’s bright red and yellow bicolor flowers.

Besides the showy color, the flowers are a draw for hummingbirds.

'Dark Fire' grows 20 inches tall in full sun to part shade and is being introduced exclusively for 2026 by the California-based Monrovia Nursery.

Brunnera 'Frost King'

Fans of variegated foliage will like this new false forget-me-not (Brunnera macrophylla) with the large, heart-shaped, netted, white and green leaves.

'Frost King' turned enough heads at last year’s Cultivate '25 industry show in Ohio to earn a Garden Center Group Retailer's Choice Award for new introductions.

Besides the attractive foliage, Frost King produces soft blue forget-me-not-like flowers for weeks in spring.

This Darwin Perennials variety grows 14 to 16 inches tall, ideally in shade or a site with morning sun and afternoon shade.

Joe Pye weed 'JoJo'

Joe Pye 'JoJo'

The extra-long bloom time of this new Joe Pye variety (Eutrochium fistulosum) is what sets 'JoJo' apart from the competition.

This new pollinator-attracting U.S. native from Kind Earth Growers has fluffy pink sterile flowers that can bloom non-stop from July into fall. The sterility of the double-petaled flowers not only accounts for the exceptionally long bloom time but also eliminates the plant’s self-seeding in garden settings, which not all gardeners want.

'JoJo' grows about four feet tall, has sturdy stems to head off flopping, and blooms best in full sun.

Agastache 'Prince's Plume'

The recent interest in attracting pollinators has shined the spotlight lately on agastaches (also known as "hummingbird mint" because of the plant's ability to draw hummingbirds as well as butterflies and bees).

'Prince's Plume' is a new one joining the fray in 2026. It's a lavender-violet bloomer that’s the favorite new perennial of Chuck Pavlich, director of new product development for Oregon’s Terra Nova Nurseries, which is introducing the variety.

Pavlich says 'Prince's Plume' is a standout for its "tall, upright habit and enormous flower clusters, making it a colorful, fragrant, bee-magnet focal point in any flower garden or landscape."

The deer-resistant plants grow nearly three feet tall and three feet across and bloom continuously from June until frost, ideally in full sun.

Heliopsis 'Sole Giatto'

This new cultivar of U.S.-native false sunflower performed well enough in trials at 80 U.S. sites last summer to earn an All-America Selections award for 2026.

Sole Giatto grows a compact 20 inches tall – significantly shorter than most heliopsis – and produces lots of long-lasting, bright-yellow, double-petaled, three-inch blooms from late spring into fall. That’s an unusually long bloom period for false sunflowers.

"Nice form and habit," observed one AAS judge. "The color of blooms was striking and impressive."

Another judge liked the strong stems, long bloom time, and "no sign of any insect or diseases."

Sole Giatto is also attractive to pollinators, not a common target of deer and rabbits, and is heat-tolerant. It performs best in full sun.

Coreopsis 'SunGlobe'

Another 2026 AAS-winning perennial is this native large-flower tickseed with the double-petaled, two-inch-wide, golden-yellow flowers.

'SunGlobe' begins blooming in late spring and can keep flowering off and on into fall, especially if you deadhead spent flowers.

“Plants have a great habit and tons of flowers all season long,” said one judge.

Another AAS judge observed that 'SunGlobe' bloomed earlier than most tickseeds and was "very floriferous with double flowers on sturdy stems."

The variety grows a compact 12 to 14 inches tall and wide in full sun or part shade.

Ajuga 'Midnight Mystery'

The ground-hugging 'Midnight Mystery' is a color novelty because it’s the first dark-leafed bugleweed variety with pink flowers.

Plants start out with bronze-purple leaves, followed by weeks of a heavy bloom that Plants Nouveau founder and co-owner Angela Treadwell-Palmer calls "the most darling rosy-pink flower spikes. As summer warms up, the leaves age to deep eggplant purple and remain nearly evergreen in even the coldest winters, providing deep purple leaves until spring."

Famed British garden celebrity Adrian Bloom found Midnight Mystery as a seedling in his garden.

Ajugas are usually used as full-sun to part-shade groundcovers in moist but well drained soil. Plants grow six to eight inches tall and spread by runners. Flowering and leaf color is best in full sun.
