It’s labelled for use around 600 plants in perennial flower beds; around groundcovers, trees and shrubs; and in xeriscape settings and rock gardens. Preen® Extended Control Weed Preventer tackles many of the toughest weeds a gardener faces, including: dandelions, crabgrass, field bindweed, white clover, chickweed, henbit, purslane, Carolina geranium, stinging nettle, horseweed or marestail, oxalis, spurge, lambsquarters and more.

Application

Application

How to Apply

Preen® Extended Control™ Weed Preventer is not a weed killer – it stops new weeds from sprouting. First remove any existing weeds that may be growing. Then apply Preen® Extended Control Weed Preventer using the easy-to-use bottle with flip-top applicator-cap. Sprinkle the product granules on top of the soil or mulch at the rate recommended on the label. Once the product is activated by watering, it forms an invisible weed control barrier in the top layer of soil (1 – 3 inches), preventing new weeds from growing. If it’s not possible to water in the product right away, and no rain falls within two days, use a rake to work the product into the soil or mulch.

When to Apply

Preen® Extended Control Weed Preventer can be applied up to two times per year around established plants and transplants. A first application can be made any time throughout the growing season -- spring, summer or fall. For ongoing weed-protection, a second seasonal application can be made two to six months after the first application.

When planting or transplanting into an area treated within the past 12 months, use fresh soil as fill in planting holes. Disturbing the soil surface after activation may result in erratic weed control.

Applying Around Established and Transplanted Plants

When used as directed, the product can be used around more than 600 listed perennials, groundcovers, shrubs and trees. For the full list, see product label. To apply around established perennials, ground covers, shrubs and trees: sprinkle Preen® Extended Control Weed Preventer evenly over the entire soil surface, at the rate of .98 oz per 10 sq ft. Keep the granules away from plant roots and foliage. Always brush off or wash off stray weed preventer granules from plant foliage to avoid leaf damage or discoloration. If it is not convenient to water-in quickly and rain is not expected within two days, lightly rake the granules into the top layer of soil or mulch.

Applying with Mulch

For best weed control, we recommend applying Preen® Extended Control Weed Preventer after spreading mulch on your perennial flower, shrub and landscape beds. Sprinkle Preen®on top of the mulch at the same rate as recommended for application directly to soil.

Proper Use

How close can I apply Preen® Extended Control Weed Preventer to a non-recommended plant?

Apply at least 12″ outside the drip-line of a non-recommended plant.

What does “established plant” mean on the Preen® Extended Control Weed Preventer label?

This term refers to perennials, trees and shrubs that are at least 3-inches in height, have not recently transplanted and have a strong root system. For recently transplanted plants: do not apply Preen® Extended Control Weed Preventer until plants have been watered once or twice to make sure the soil is well and uniformly settled by packing or irrigation around the plants. An established ground cover is one that is not recently planted, is well-rooted and has spread and filled in to your satisfaction. Note: Groundcovers will not spread where Preen® Extended Control Weed Preventer is active (about 4–6 months).

What does “non-bearing" fruit and nut trees mean?

This term refers to established fruit and nut trees that have not matured to the point of producing a harvest. Preen® Extended Control Weed Preventer can be applied around the label listed non-bearing fruit and nut trees until they begin bearing fruit or nuts; otherwise, it cannot be applied.

When do I apply Preen® Extended Control Weed Preventer?

A first application can be made at any time throughout the growing season -- spring, summer or fall. To establish a 12-month weed-protection cycle, reapply the product in six months.

Is there a benefit to applying Preen® Extended Control Weed Preventer in the fall?

September and October are perfect months for a fall application as many winter annual weeds actively germinate and grow slowly in fall and even over winter. When applied in fall, the product helps reduce these weeds in early spring and thus makes spring garden preparation easier.

Do I have to weed first before applying Preen® Extended Control Weed Preventer?

Yes. Preen® Extended Control Weed Preventer does not kill existing weeds. First get rid of existing weeds, roots and all, then apply Preen® Extended Control Weed Preventer. If there is no opportunity to remove weeds first, an initial application can be utilized to prevent further weeds until you have an opportunity to clear the garden and landscape beds.

When do I reapply Preen® Extended Control Weed Preventer?

To establish a 12-month weed-protection cycle, reapply the product six months after the prior application. Should excessively warm wet conditions shorten the effective period, it is okay to reapply 60 days or more after the prior application. Do not apply more than three times per year.

Can Preen® Extended Control Weed Preventer be applied when plant foliage is wet?

Yes, but only if you immediately wash off any stray granules that stick to wet leaves as wet granules can damage or discolor plant foliage. Much easier is to apply the product when leaves are dry, as then granules that land on foliage can be readily brushed off by hand.

Does Preen® Extended Control Weed Preventer need to be watered-in?

Yes; rain or water must immediately follow application to activate the product.

What happens if rain or water does not immediately occur after application?

Preen® Extended Control Weed Preventer will not start to work until activated by rain or watering. If watering is not an option, time your application to coincide with expected rain, or lightly rake the granules into the soil to protect the active ingredient from UV degradation by sunlight until rain occurs.

How much Preen® Extended Control Weed Preventer should I apply?

For label recommended flowers, trees, shrubs, and groundcovers, sprinkle granules lightly and evenly over the soil. Apply approximately .98 oz per each 10 square feet, or 6.125 lb per 1,000 square feet.

Can Preen® Extended Control Weed Preventer be applied on plant foliage or exposed plant roots?

No; plant injury could result.

What do I do if Preen® Extended Control Weed Preventer accidentally got on plant foliage during application?

You should immediately brush off any granules that fall on dry plant foliage. If any granules fall on wet foliage, you should thoroughly and immediately rinse them off with a garden hose.

How do you use Preen® Extended Control Weed Preventer with flowers, trees, and shrubs?

Remove existing weeds and weed roots. Then apply Preen® Extended Control Weed Preventer to soil or mulch around established plants and transplants. Then water in thoroughly.

How do you use Preen® Extended Control Weed Preventer with groundcovers?

Check that your groundcovers are listed on the product label. If they are fully established and have spread as you desire, then apply Preen® Extended Control Weed Preventer around the dry foliage and water in immediately.

Why can't I apply Preen® Extended Control Weed Preventer to muck (constantly wet) soil or soils containing more than 10% organic matter?

These types of soils will neutralize the active ingredients in Preen® Extended Control Weed Preventer.

When do I apply Preen® Extended Control Weed Preventer with bulbs?

Preen® Extended Control Weed Preventer may be applied for the control of annual weeds in ornamental bulbs, e.g., bulbous iris, daffodil (narcissus), hyacinth and tulip. Apply this product on top of the soil 2 to 4 weeks after planting but prior to the emergence of annual weeds. This product may also be applied following bulb emergence but prior to flowering and after flowering. For fall planted bulbs, apply the product in late winter or early spring to soil surface.

Do not apply to tulip plants that have emerged to a height greater than 3/4 inch. Do not apply to gladiolus prior to emergence or if corms are less than one inch in diameter. Do not apply to bulbs while they are flowering.

Does Preen® Extended Control Weed Preventer control weeds that have been tilled under?

No; already growing weeds that are not completely removed will emerge again. Start with a clean slate: remove existing weeds, roots and all. Then apply Preen® Extended Control Weed Preventer.

Do I apply Preen® Extended Control Weed Preventer by hand?

No; apply Preen® Extended Control Weed Preventer using the easy-to-use bottle with flip-top applicator-cap. Sprinkle the product granules on top of the soil or mulch at the rate recommended on the label, then water in to activate.

Can I mix Preen® Extended Control Weed Preventer with water before application?

No; mixing with water dilutes the active ingredients and renders the product ineffective.

How long after an application of Preen® Extended Control Weed Preventer should I wait before planting non label-recommended plants?

You should wait 12 months.

Staining

Can Preen® Extended Control Weed Preventer stain?

Yes; Preen® Extended Control Weed Preventer can stain porous surfaces such as concrete, rocks, bricks, landscape blocks, shoes, leather, linoleum, vinyl, shoes, and carpet.

How do I prevent possible staining?

Never apply Preen® Extended Control Weed Preventer when any surrounding porous surface is wet. Sweep off or dry brush off stray granules from any non-target surface before watering the area to activate the product. To avoid surface staining in storage, place the bottle on top of a piece of cardboard or thick newspaper, not directly on shelving or flooring such as linoleum, vinyl, tile, cement or carpet.

How can I get rid of a Preen® Extended Control Weed Preventer stain?

Try Goo Gone or another citrus-based cleaning product to lessen the appearance of or remove a stain. Always test a small area first to ensure the product won't cause additional staining.

For porous surfaces: Use equal parts soapy water and bleach, or a paste of baking soda and water, or ultraviolet light/sunlight, or a citrus-based cleaner, or 409 carpet foaming spray cleaner. Always follow manufacturer's directions.

For non-porous, uncoated surfaces: Use acetone or an acetone based nail polish remover.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Another gardening step I just applied this product to my flower beds so I am not sure how effective it is yet. After pulling weeds, I applied according to directions which was easy enough. But I then had to water everything before mulching as well. I am not sure that this will be more effective that mulch and it was a significant extra step considering the amount of flower beds I have. I think it’s worth considering if you don’t mulch though!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to apply and keeps my flower beds tidy We live in central Texas and have poor clay soil. Nothing much grows in it except weeds. I plant hardy native perennials in my flower beds and they seem to do well enough. But no amount of mulch will keep the weeds out. Preen Extended Control Weed Preventer is easy to apply where I need it, and it really does stop new weeds from popping up. Less time spent weeding, more time to buy pretty plants that will actually grow. I also try to use lawn chemicals sparingly - I like that I can control exactly where this goes and target those specific problem areas.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Easy application I used this shortly after receiving it. First thoughts were not great. Given spring has sprung weeds were already present in my flower garden area. The instructions say to pull any weeds that are already there. So I had to go to work getting the weeds out. The application process is easy. The spout on the jug allows you to evenly sprinkle in the areas you want to. I can’t give praise on the preventive due to the fact it really hasn’t had enough time to prove itself to me yet. But 2 weeks in and no weeds so far!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Preen works well So far I'm loving my Preen Extended Control Weed Preventer Bottle. Just sprinkle this along my garden and weeds have just disappeared. I have a medium size garden and still have plenty left for the fall when weeds start growing again. Loving this and my garden is loving it also!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great packaging! I received this product to try for free, and now that our winter seems to have subsided I finally get to give this product a try. I love the built in spreader spout, it provides easy application, and I don’t have to buy additional equipment to apply this product. The package itself is pretty lightweight compared to other brands which is nice. The only con that I see is so far is that it is for “bed” use only, I wish I could use this product on my lawn as well. It is still too early to see major results so I will update my review again at a later time but for now so far so good!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Works on Small Weeds I wanted to give this item a fair chance to work before writing my review. 9 days ago, I placed this in an area where it is cement stones with gaps between them & weeds were growing up. I also placed it in a stone area where some thicker, taller weeds had come up. Well, the area up where there were small amounts coming up between the stones seems dead, but the thicker taller weeds are still alive & thriving. So it seems that this works if you get them while very small and if they aren't a thick type weed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No more weeds! This stuff is amazing! Yes you have to weed before you use it, but thats ok. After yanking up the weeds, this weed preventer does the rest. Very easy to use and has a cool flip cap the distributes the product evenly. This only needs to be done a couple times a year. I used it a while ago and still no weeds, yay for me!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy application Incredibly easy to sprinkle directly out of the jug. Looks like the spots I used it are so far not producing weeds on the sidewalk. Hope it lasts all summer and all season. I would recommend this to anyone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Results and Easy to Use! I am so happy with the results of Preen Extended Control Weed Preventer. It's that time of the year here where the weeds start growing like crazy, so it was perfect timing to apply this. I love that it only has to be applied twice a year, and it prevents weeds from growing in the first place. It's so easy to use; you just open the cap and spread it around, and then water it. That's it! The container is light too which is nice. It's going to be so wonderful to not have to constantly pull weeds this year!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Perfect timing My husband just weeded and re-mulched our flower beds. We received this in the mail as a sample and it came right at the right time. We used it on our flower beds and we have yet to see any weeds poking through.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Positive results so far. I got this a few weeks ago so this I haven't had a chance to see the long term results yet. The flip top flat spout makes application easy. It helps spread out the granules because the spout is flat which prevents pooling of the granules. I was able to apply just where I want (in the garden, not on the grass). In a month or so, I should know whether it is working.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simple to use I love that it is so simple to use and comes in a nice size bottle . So far it has worked great and I havent had any issues at all. I am very happy with this product and would recommend it to others trying to prevent weeds.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Effective I used the weed control around my bushes, trees and around my sidewalks and so far it has very effective. I like this type of control because you dont have fluid leaking everywhere drifting into other plants. I highly recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Use and forget it I really appreciate the easy-pour container, it's so much easier than dragging out the spreader. And I appreciate the fact that there's no obnoxious odor. I'm sensitive to smells. We love having a beautiful flower bed and tree beds but weeding them is a huge hassle and the landscape fabric doesn't really work well. Preen gets the job done and it's only twice a year instead of weekly weed-pulling on my knees. Highly recommend.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So Far So Good I got this a few weeks ago and in this extended winter, I can't say how effective it is for killing weeds yet. I can say that I have yet to see any weeds come up whether that is because of the constant snow storms or this product, only time will tell! As for the packaging and ease of use, everything went smoothly and application was easy. The turn out applicator worked well except whenever you go to close it, some of the granules have to be dusted off first. Hopefully once spring and summer finally arrive here in East Tennessee, the product will have done it's job and the weeds will never even pop up!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this weed prevention! I got Preen's Weed prevention a couple weeks ago and could not wait until the weather was pretty enough to start using it. I'm excited that it will prevent weeds that I've already pulled up from my flowers from coming back! It's very easy to pour from container. Does not have an odor. You only have to use twice a year instead of repeating every few weeks or couple of months. I'm already in love with this! I would highly recommend if you love your flowers but hate having to week them constantly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best! We live in Florida so we have weeds all year long. They grow fast everywhere here. In our patio area we have pavers that weeds like to grow through. Preen is the perfect solution to get rid of unwanted weeds. It is simple to use and very effective. Preen does what one would expect it to do that is make the weeds go away.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So far so good I put this around my flower bed about a week ago after I cleared all existing weeds and did as the directions said I watered the area I applied it to. So far there has been no new weed growth. Again its only been a week but I am impressed because with all the rain we've had nothing new has sprouted. I am really interested in seeing if it truly lasts 6 months. But as of right now it's working really well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to Use After a good once over of the instructions I pulled out my gardening tools and went to work on pulling all the weeds in my flower beds around the house. I also cleared them from the base of the trees where we keep grass clear from growing. Once all weeds were removed the task with Preen Extended Control Weed Preventer is pretty easy just evenly sprinkle it on where you dont want weeds ( Not on your lawn) then water it. The easy pour spout with the fan type pour make for easy even distribution. I will be all set for the next several months. No weed picking or having to dig out large hand yard tools. I would recommend giving this a try it will save you lots of time in the long run.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works fine I used my free sample of Preen weed preventer I received for free for my opinion and I must say it is an ease to use, and weeds won't come. Spreads easy and melts and dissolves after rain and no weeds yet.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great I had never used this brand before so I wasn’t sure how well it worked! I like that the flap on the lid is the spreader! You flip it down and shake where ever you want it to kill the weeds! It works great

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product I received this for review and so far it's amazing at keeping those weeds from coming back. Easy application, and the best part is you don't have to keep reapplying it once its down your good for six months.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Easy to apply I used the product last week. It was very easy to apply evenly. The product flowed out of the tap very smoothly. I will update review when I know how well it keeps the weeds out. The product also covered a large area. I was able to do all 3 of my large flower beds.
